Abstract:   (926 Views)
Prepositions as a group of frequent and important grammatical words play an important role in many languages, including Persian. The aim of this study is to examine the polysemy of the preposition "under" in Persian in the framework of cognitive linguistics approach and based on two theories of principled polysemy (Tyler and Evans, 2001, 2003) and the theory of image schemas (Johnson, 1987). The research data includes a set of Persian sentences and phrases containing the preposition "under" which have been extracted from the Hamshahri corpus (second version). In addition to this corpus, two encyclopedias of Dehkhoda and Moien have also been used. The results of the study show that the preposition "under" in its first and prototype meaning refers to a situation in which an object (trajectory object) is positioned vertically lower than another object (landmark) and it can be a distance between them or not and one can cover the other or not. In addition, "under" has three meanings, "less", "dominance and control", and "influence" as well, which are the result of the metaphorical expansion of the prototype meaning.
