Abstract
Pierre-Simon Ballanche (1776-1847) occupies an unusual position in the intellectual landscape of post-Revolutionary France. A printer’s son from Lyon, marked by the violence of the Revolution and the siege of his city, he developed across three decades an ambitious and deliberately unfinished philosophical project, the Social Palingenesis, in which history is read as a theodicy: humanity advances through ordeals, expiations, and rehabilitations toward a progressive emancipation. This article isolates a dimension of that project that has rarely been studied in its own right — Ballanche’s implicit philosophy of language — and argues that it is the keystone of his whole system.
The central claim is that, for Ballanche, language is not a tool that pre-existing human beings use to communicate, but the first social institution. Speech is a gift, originally divine, transmitted through tradition; it precedes the individual and constitutes him as a social being. The human being does not invent the word and then enter society.
The article situates this linguistics within Ballanche’s reception, from Sainte-Beuve’s judgment that his influence was “imperceptible but real and growing,” through Chateaubriand’s view of him as the spokesman of the historical school of Vico and Herder, to his impact on the Saint-Simonians (Enfantin, Buchez) and on Catholic historicism (Bonnetty, Ozanam, the Annales de philosophie chrétienne). It concludes that Ballanche anticipates, on the terrain of language, twentieth-century cultural interpreters such as Claude Lévi-Strauss and Mircea Eliade, and that his neglected work deserves a place in the genealogy of modern philology, sociology, historiography, and mythopoetics.
