Abstract

If research in translation pedagogy has long focused on the linguistic skills of learner-translators, the role of their personality remains largely underexplored. This study examines the influence of neuroticism and conscientiousness on the quality of technical translation among 22 Iranian students of French as a foreign language (FFL). Participants translated a specialized text (Islamic texts) without access to digital tools. The translations were assessed using an original evaluation grid across four dimensions: semantic transfer, stylistic quality, lexical accuracy, and adherence to formatting norms. The results show a significant negative correlation between neuroticism and semantic quality (r = -0.502) and stylistic quality (ρ = -0.668), as well as a positive correlation with the number of lexical errors (r = 0.363). In contrast, no significant relationship was observed with conscientiousness. These findings confirm the negative effect of neuroticism on specialized translation performance, likely because anxiety, inherent to neuroticism, diverts part of the cognitive resources away from the assigned task. Pedagogical implications are proposed to minimize these negative influences.
