English

This study investigates the interactive patterns of the five senses and their musical reflections in the poetry of Paul Verlaine and Nima Yushij through a comparative approach based on cognitive linguistics and cognitive stylistics. The theoretical framework is based on cognitive linguistics and cognitive stylistics, particularly Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), Conceptual Blending Theory, and cognitive approaches to literary style. The research examines how sensory experience contributes to meaning construction, poetic imagery, and poetic musicality. To this end, ten pairs of poems by Verlaine and Nima Yushij were selected and analyzed based on synesthesia, sensory interaction, poetic imagery, musical structure, and cognitive mechanisms.

The findings demonstrate that sensory interaction in the poetry of both poets functions not merely as a descriptive tool, but as cognitive mechanism that transforms sensory experiences into emotional and aesthetic meaning.

The analysis reveals that in Verlaine’s poetry, sensory interaction primarily creates symbolic, musical, and emotionally nuanced spaces where light, sound, silence, and movement reflect inner emotional states. By contrast, Nima Yushij employs synesthetic structures to connect nature with lived human experience, transforming natural elements into representations of suffering, expectation, solitude, resistance, and hope.

The comparative results indicate that poetic musicality in both poets is connected with sensory perception. Verlaine achieves this through phonetic harmony, gentle rhythm, and internal musicality, whereas Yushij employs free rhythm, semantic repetition, and sound-image integration. Thus, synesthesia functions not merely as a literary device but as a cognitive process through which language, perception, and music interact to construct meaning.
