Abstract:   (145 Views)

In the present study, the encoding of copular verbs in predicative and locative/existential clauses in the Khalaj language spoken in the provinces of Qom and Markazi is examined based on typological studies. The research corpus consists of 480 sentences and two spontaneous speech texts. Some sentences are extracted from Khalaj language data available in the Iran Linguistic Atlas, and others are collected through a questionnaire designed by the author. The results of the data analysis indicate that in the Khalaj language spoken in the provinces of Qom and Markazi, two strategies, “split” and “shared” are employed for encoding copular verbs in predicative and locative/existential clauses. This means that speakers of this language use similar and dissimilar forms of copular verbs in the said clauses. Khalaj is a verb-final (SOV) language, and the word order of the predicate and copular verb in this language is such that the predicate precedes the copular verb.
